Supertuscan Wine Tour

Description

Our day starts with a drive south west of Siena, into dense and diverse forests over mineral-rich soils with frequent clearings onto quarries, cultivated farmland and orchards on our descent towards the Mediterranean coast.

Stop at a fascinating, modern farm that benefits from the particular microclimate between Mediterranean sea breezes and the inland hills. An in-depth visit will give us new insight into the richness of biodiversity and uniqueness that makes this often overlooked site so special. The farm exploits this diversity to create a selection of excellences which will surprise even the most innovative thinkers: different terroirs yielding grape varietals grown by organic and biodynamic methods combined with modern technologies, give rise to truly innovative Supertuscan wines. Savour these specialities in the company of other typical Maremma products before continuing our tour towards the coast.

Modern vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot surround the beautiful town of Bolgheri, internationally known as a top wine region since the 70s when the local Sassicaia wine out-shun an assortment of Bordeaux wines, made from the same varietals. Enjoy leisure time roaming the sleepy streets of this beautiful town and its stores, have a light lunch or visit the Wine Center with its sensory and multimedia section and tasting room.

In the afternoon, visit a truly iconic winery for a tour that doesn’t merely take you through the wine-making processes, but allows you to experience the stories of a 700 year old wine-making family legacy, from past traditions, to to-date projects and future endeavors that combine customs with innovation. View modern art and complete the experience with a tasting of famous Supertuscan wines that are iconic and unforgettable.

Returning to Siena via a different route we stop in Massa Marittima, a hilltop town with layers of history and monuments that date back to the Bronze Age, and a Sienese fortress that overlooks the valley all the way to the sea. The picturesque streets and strangely shaped main square with its impressive Romanesque Cathedral are an absolute delight with the day’s waning light, and marvel at the absolutely unique fresco of the Fertility Tree.
