Vernaccia & Chianti Wine Tour

Vernaccia Whites and Chianti Classico

Description

Our trip starts with a drive towards the medieval town of towers, San Gimignano, during which we will take a stop for a brief walk in the fortress of Monteriggioni, a perfectly preserved fortress with a complete ring of walls and turrets built in the 13th century and mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy.

We then continue to the fascinating town of San Gimignano, one of the most characteristic of Tuscany’s hilltop towns, with its many austere towers that defiantly survived the centuries and are still standing today. Recognized as a Unesco world heritage site, it is a testimony of medieval architecture. Here you can walk along the ancient via Francigena route, the road that travelers and pilgrims from all over Europe used to reach Rome and St Peter’s tomb. Today, bustling San Gimignano is not only churches, towers and museums, but is also flourishing with artisanal boutiques of local products, stores selling the town’s ‘red gold’ - saffron spice - and the centuries old Vernaccia white wine, Italy’s first white wine to have obtained DOCG status.

Lunch will be served at a small family run farm where you enjoy a wholesome, traditional lunch prepared using seasonal products and including the saffron spice and Vernaccia wine for which the area has become so renowned.

After lunch we make our way to the Chianti, where we visit a winery to meet the local producer of Chianti Classico DOCG wines and be shown around the estate that has remained in the hands of the same family for many generations. See the cellars, learn about the wine making processes and taste the various flavours and blends and learn to distinguish these traditional wines.

This tour can run from Siena as well as from Florence, with slight modifications in the order of the visits.
