San Galgano & Francigena Sightseeing tour

Between Legendary history and Myth

Description

Explore the beauty of secondary routes through Tuscany's most luscious greenery, away from the busy cities and tourist crowds, to discover the marvel of places caught between history and legend.
In the morning, visit the beautiful Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano and the hermitage of Montesiepi, where the Galgano knight retired and became a hermit after renouncing a worldly and violent life.
His Sword in the Stone is perhaps the most fascinating and mysterious relic of the entire region, carefully preserved here as a testament to his sainthood. But how does a Tuscan Saint connect to the famous legend of King Arthur and his sword in the stone? The Romanesque abbey and other mythical marvels are legendary connections and secrets that perhaps only the monks can really know.

After enjoying lunch at a local Trattoria serving traditional, local products we continue to explore the beauty of the area with its charming villages and hamlets where time seems to have stood still. Walk the cobblestone streets behind country houses and meet sleepy donkeys today in the places where tradesmen once sought refuge, fortified buildings nestled behind protective, medieval walls.
Enter the cool churches to marvel at the artworks where pilgrims whispered prayers and lit candles while resting their tired feet, for Rome was still two weeks’ walk away.

Upon request we can visit a Cinta Senese pig farm that produces delicious cold cuts made from the most noble Cinta Senese, the autochthonous pig containing more omega 3 than cholesterol fat which can only be found in the Sienese area.

Green woods and vineyards, brief stops for great photography and a final stop at the preserved medieval fortress of Monteriggioni, the Castle that withstood all sieges, to enjoy a little sight-seeing or wine-tasting before returning to Siena and your accommodation.

  • Off the beaten path destinations
