Our trip starts with driving towardsSan Gimignano, our guide will take you to this beautiful and romantic town of towers, one of the most characteristic of Tuscany’s Hill-Towns. This little town is famous for its many austere medieval towers that defiantly survived the centuries and are still standing today. It has recently been recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site as a testimony of medieval architecture. Here we can walk along the ancient route of the Via Francigena, the main route to Rome for travelers and pilgrims of all Europe. Today again the bustling San Gimignano flourishes with artisanal boutiques of the local trades and stores selling the towns ‘red gold’, the saffron spice and the centuries old Vernaccia white wine. We will also have time for entering the Cathedral or Civic museum, shopping in the many boutiques of artisanal manufactures such as leather and hand painted pottery, sampling the fruits of the soil in the food stores and wine bars, or spending your time exploring the town and its many hidden beauties. After spending time visiting San Gimignano we will finally meet our bikes and we will let our adventure along the countryside paths of the Chianti area. We will pass through vineyards, fields and we will enjoy the view of the typical Tuscan landscape. Our first stop will be in Staggia where we will visit its castle. This hamlet and its fortress were built around 994 by the Soarzi family as it was located right in the middle between Siena and Florence, 2 towns that were big enemies at the time. Towards the end of the XII century it was bought by the Franzesi, a family of that area that became rich thanks to various trades with France. Here we will see the fortress and its walls besides the tower that dominates the surrounding area.
After Staggia and its castle we head out of town to a quite location where we will have a picnic lunch. We will sit down and eat the typical fresh products that this land offers while we enjoy the countryside. After that we will continue our ride along the Chianti Classico paths, we will see its forests, its neat rows of vineyards and some other pretty medieval hamlets. Once our ride will get to destination we will jump back on our van and we will go to a Chianti winery for a real Chianti Classico experience. We will meet the family that runs the winery and we will taste some of those good red wines while being provided with all the due information about it. The owner will tell us all the secrets behind this wine and its production.
The biking tour is suitable for anyone in good physical condition and with experience in pretty long rides. It is highly recommended you wear comfortable clothes and shoes, to bring water, a hat, sun cream.
The normal operation of the activity is subjected to weather condition. In case the tour had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, we will offer the choice to tour on an alternate date or receive full refund.
