Description

After a transfer to the beautiful medieval town of Siena, start the day with a guided walking tour of the historical center with an expert local guide. Begin with a visit to the magnificent Basilica of San Domenico to admire its Gothic architecture constructed entirely in brick. Explore Siena’s Old Town and listen as your guide points out its most important historical buildings, such as Rocca Salimbeni, currently housing the seat of the world’s oldest bank, the Monte dei Paschi. Continue to admire one of Italy's most beautiful piazzas, built in the shape of a shell, the Piazza del Campo is the seat of one of the most famous medieval tournaments, the Palio horse race which is held twice a year by the city's Contrada neighborhoods and is to this day, the heart and soul of this magnificent medieval city.
End your tour with a guided visit to one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy, the Siena Duomo (Siena Cathedral), named locally as Il Duomo. Your guide will escort you into this breathtaking cathedral to see impressive masterpieces by Donatello, Bernini and Michelangelo. Admire the exquisite Gothic architecture; walk through nave arcades with Renaissance busts of popes and emperors; and marvel at the unique black-and-white-striped bell tower. After your visit of Siena meet the van for a short drive through the Tuscan countryside to a family run winery, here you will meet the locals, tour the cellars and enjoy a traditional lunch paired with the wineries wines. Learn about the making of Chianti and Supertuscan wines as you savor the rich flavors of the local cuisine. After lunch continue to another beautiful and famous hill-town, Montepulciano. This town was at first under the dominance of the medieval Siena and then under the renaissance Florence, here you can recognize the influences of both towns in its architecture and art. The town is located on a steep hill overlooking the amazing views of the Tuscany - Umbria border. Visit the main square, Piazza Grande, and explore this noble town and its many important palaces owned by the noble families that still live here.
