In the morning explore Siena’s Old Town
and listen as your guide points out and talks about all the main sights and unveils the traditions and folklore of the Palio. Continue on your way to visit one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy, the Siena Duomo
(Siena Cathedral), named locally as Il Duomo. Your guide will escort you into this breathtaking cathedral to see the impressive masterpieces by Donatello, Bernini and Michelangelo. Admire the exquisite Gothic architecture; walk through nave arcades with Renaissance busts of popes and emperors; and marvel at the unique black-and-white-striped bell tower.
Spend lunchtime at your own leisure in town or have us take you to a nearby farm for a Tuscan meal.
In the early afternoon we stop for a walk in the fortress of Monteriggioni
, a medieval and perfectly preserved fortress with a complete ring of walls and turrets built in the 13th century and mentioned by Dante in his Devine Comedy.
Continue on to the fascinating town of San Gimignano
, one of the most characteristic Tuscany’s Hill-Towns with its many austere medieval towers that defiantly survived the centuries and are still standing today. It has recently been recognized as a Unesco world heritage site as a testimony of medieval architecture. Here we can walk along the ancient route of the Via Francigena, the main route to Rome for travelers and pilgrims of all Europe. Today again the bustling San Gimignano flourishes with artisanal boutiques of the local trades and stores selling the towns ‘red gold’, the saffron spice and the centuries old Vernaccia white wine.
