This tour begins with the visit to the village of San Quirico d’Orcia, a municipality inside the Val d’Orcia landscape. Located on the Via Francigena, this village has two churches which are remarkable from an artistic point of view: the Collegiate church of San Quirico, once a rural “pieve” (pleban church) from the 8th century, and the Romanesque church of San Biagio a Vignoni. Once you have visited this interesting site we will take our bikes and we will start our ride thought the Brunello area, famous for its rich vineyards, its historical olive trees and the typical Southern panorama. We will visit this hilly landscape of the area and we will enjoy the nature and the beauty of its countryside.
We will then arrive to a family run winery where we are introduced to the owners and winemakers, we visit the farm before sitting down to enjoy a traditional Tuscan meal accompanied by the delicious biological wines produced here. Of the 230 such wineries of the area we normally choose to visit medium and small sized wineries as we believe that they make more characteristic artisanal wines, that are harder to find and, to us, more complex and interesting than the mass produced wines of the large wineries. Our tour will then be headed to the stunning ancient mystical Benedictine abbey of Sant'Antimo, a special place set in fabulous landscapes, which permeate peace and tranquility, truly one of the main wonders of Tuscany.
After jumping back on our bikes and riding along this unique landscape we will later visit another winery where we will get a detailed description of the wine making processes, learn about the tools used, the way the vines are cared for and about the aging in oak barrels that this wine must have by law for many years. After visiting the cellars and getting to know the winemakers we will sit down for a last tasting of this nectar of the gods.
Our last stop will be in Montalcino, the hill-town that gives its name to the region and its wines. Here we will leave our “travel companions” and we will take our van in order to visit the town at your own pace. Here we will have the opportunity of climbing the walls of the fortress where the brave soldiers of the Republic of Siena made its last stand to Florence and the Medici. Spend time visiting the towns stores, tasting the Brunello wines in the many wine bars or simply wander around the city walls and enjoying the incredible views overlooking the valleys and vineyards below.
The biking tour is suitable for anyone in good physical condition and with experience in pretty long rides. It is highly recommended you wear comfortable clothes and shoes, to bring water, a hat, sun cream.
The normal operation of the activity is subjected to weather condition. In case the tour had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, we will offer the choice to tour on an alternate date or receive full refund.
