Your meeting point is at the Basilica of San Domenico in Siena 9:30am,  easy to find even if you are arriving from out of town. Here you will meet the driver guide for the start of the tour. This is a tour for wine lovers but also an opportunity of seeing Tuscany’s pretty countryside and getting to know the locals and their ways. We start by taking the ancient roman road Cassia towards the famous wine hill of Montalcino.

The first stop is at a small and particular winery where we can walk among the vineyards, explore the cellars and enjoy an introductory tasting of the famous Brunello wine. We later arrive to Montalcino, the hill-town that gives its name to the region and its wines. Here you have the opportunity of climbing the walls of the fortress where the brave soldiers of the republic of Siena made its last stand to Florence and the Medici. Spend time visiting the towns stores, tasting the Brunello wines in the many wine bars or simply wander around the city walls and enjoying the incredible views overlooking the valleys  and vineyards below.

After our visit to the town of Montalcino we make our way to a family run winery where we are introduced to the owners and winemakers, we visit the farm before sitting down to enjoy a traditional Tuscan meal accompanied by the delicious wines produced here.

It could occur that the farm for some reason is unavailable on the day. In this case we will enjoy our traditional Tuscan meal in a characteristic and good trattoria. After lunch we stop to visit the stunning ancient mystical Benedictine abbey of Sant Antimo, a special place set in fabulous landscapes, which permeate peace and tranquility, truly one of the main wonders of Tuscany. Whenever possible you can witness the monks sing in Gregorian and enjoy the nature surrounding this abbey.

In the afternoon we visit a third winery where we get a detailed description of the wine making processes, learn about the tools used, the way the vines are cared for and about the aging in oak barrels that this wine must have by law for many years. After visiting the cellars and getting to know the winemakers we sit down for a last tasting of this nectar of the gods. Of the 230 such wineries of the area we normally choose to visit medium and small sized wineries as we believe that they make more characteristic artisanal wines, that are harder to find and, to us, more complex and interesting than the mass produced wines of the large wineries.

In some occasions, due to availability or last minute changes, the itinerary might vary a little. In this case the tour could be modified slightly. However the day will maintain a similar general imprint, same duration and have all the same inclusions.
