wine, art and history
Visit the rugged hills and dense forests that have in the past been home to rebels and brigands of old, and that today preserve an ancient beauty and closeness to nature. Walk the streets of Massa Marittima the last hill town before the coast, admire its beautiful cathedral and walk the quiet streets in the morning.
Enjoy a lunch in a winery accompanied by the little known but excellent Super Tuscans that this area has to offer. Visit the surreal fortresses perched on the hilltops of this area and enjoy a day with great wines, views and very few crowds.
Massa Marittima is situated in the Maremma. Despite its name it is more than 20 km from the sea and in fact "marittima" does not allude to the sea but rather to the Maremma. Massa Marittima was founded by the Etruscans. It is located in the Colline Metallifere, hills that have produced over the centuries, great wealth due to nearby copper and silver mines. The medieval city will affect those who love history, architecture and art lovers ... It is in fact one of the most beautiful jewels of medieval Maremma. The Duomo, a wonderful Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece, stands in what is the heart of town.
After the morning tour of Massa Marittima, our day will continue with a visit to a local farm where we will try the fine wines. The afternoon will be dedicated to the discovery of the fortresses and castles of the area. We will admire the splendid panorama from the castle of Roccatederighi and visit the castle of Montemassi, rendered famous by the Sienese painting of the Guidoriccio by Simone Martini.
