Lucca retains the charm of the small and ancient Italian city-states. Its cautious policy has allowed it for ever to remain free and independent.
Lucca miraculously survived the destruction of the war and still maintains intact its artistic heritage. The impressive tree-lined Renaissance walls are now a large public park that offers visitors and locals the chance to walk in nature and admire the beautiful views over the medieval streets flanked by towers and elegant shops.
Beautiful Romanesque churches, alternating with bright squares, bring to the eye of the visitor new and unexpected perspectives. The Cathedral, dedicated to St. Martin, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. Inside there are two monuments very dear to Lucca: the Holy Face and the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto.
Lucca was also the birthplace of the famous composer Giacomo Puccini.
